Why the FNS website won't open abroad
The Federal Tax Service website (nalog.gov.ru) rejects IP addresses from other countries. It is geo-blocking — a standard security measure for Russian government resources. The site simply refuses connections that don't originate in Russia.
The problem: tax deadlines don't wait. Missing a filing or payment date means real fines.
What exactly gets blocked
- The taxpayer's personal account (login via Gosuslugi)
- Filing 3-NDFL tax returns
- Checking and paying outstanding taxes
- Claiming tax deductions (property, social)
- The «Мой налог» mobile app for the self-employed
Why an ordinary VPN won't help
FNS runs an advanced protection system that recognises VPN traffic. If a service uses dated protocols or well-known IP ranges, you get either an access error or endless captchas when logging in through Gosuslugi.
You need a VPN built on modern protocols (VLESS, Trojan) — they disguise themselves as ordinary HTTPS and don't trip the defences of government portals.
How to open nalog.gov.ru from abroad
- Install VPN Russia on your iPhone, iPad, Android device or Mac
- Connect to a Russian server
- Open nalog.gov.ru — the site loads as usual
- Log in via Gosuslugi and work with your documents
Practical tips
Mind the timezone. FNS runs on Moscow time. Maintenance windows are usually at night MSK — plan around that if you are in Asia or the Americas.
Prepare documents in advance. Gather scans and files before you open the site — it saves time and nerves when filling in the forms.
Don't leave it to the last day. Filing deadlines are strict. Outages happen to everyone, and users abroad have more reasons for delays.
Keeping your tax data safe
The taxpayer account holds passport data, income and property records. Using unencrypted hotel Wi-Fi for that is a risk. A VPN wraps the connection in an encrypted tunnel, so the data travels safely even on open networks.
